OU student takes poison during March

HYDERABAD: A 28-year-old student of Osmania University is battling for his life in a private hospital after attempting suicide by consuming poison during the March on Tank Bund Road on Thursday.
According to eyewitnesses, around 3.15pm, Sampath Naik, a native of Adilabad and pursuing second year MA in Islamic Studies at OU, shouted 'Jai Telangana' slogans and pulled out a pesticide bottle from his trousers and gulped the liquid. Fellow protesters immediately called an ambulance and rushed him to a nearby private hospital.
Before getting into the ambulance, Naik handed over copies of a suicide note written by him to people close by. In the note, which had photographs of people who had allegedly committed suicide for a separate Telangana state, Naik had written in Telugu: "In spite of voting for them (public representatives), they could not succeed in achieving separate statehood for Telangana and my suicide is a reminder for them that people are willing to die for Telangana."
Doctors at Ravi Helios Hospital, where Naik was admitted, said he developed convulsions after consuming Endosulfan, a pesticide. "He is critical. He is being treated for poisoning and convulsions," Dr Vijay Bhaskar, CEO, Ravi Helios Hospital, said. According to a man, who identified himself as Mahesh and claimed to be Naik's friend, the victim was active in the movement and that he had secured admission for PhD in management studies.
OU will mark a bandh on Friday.
